The Beauty of Something Shining Out of the Dark

The idea of light in the Middle Ages was to provide a completely transformative experience so that when you entered the cathedral, you were existing in a world of color and light. Modern Western culture does is it keeps that eschatological take on light and applies it without it being an object that you present in contrast with the pervasive shadows of actual life. We actually live in the new Jerusalem. We make it all around us.
