CHAPTER

Is a VSD Restrictive?

VSDs can be flow and pressure restrictive, which is determined by both the size of the VSD and differences between the systemic and pulmonary vascular resistance. Restrictive defects are those with high resistance to flow and permit only a small amount of left to right shunting. By ECHO, we can doppler the flow across the ventricular septal defect to assess the velocity and gradient across the VSD. The louder the murmur, the more likely the patient is to have a restrictive defect.
