Lewis and Tolkien: A Comparison

Tolkien is the only author I can think of who compares people to trees when Gandalf is facing the Balrog. He said he looked like a withered old oak, trying to weather this terrible storm. So did the act of comparison put Lewis in a new perspective? Well I would say that the ransom trilogy was fairly well developed world building. But Tolkien critiqued out of the silent planet. It's amazing they were friends for so long because they were so different.
