An aerial effect is the tendency of languages that live next to each other for a long time to start borrowing things from each other. Idioms, even if people aren't traveling a lot, they might be talking with their neighbors, even if they're speaking different languages. Even surprisingly low level grammar features can be borrowed in time. This doesn't necessarily affect your conlang so much as it affects other as part something in your conlang can affect the world.
