It's even mentioned in the sheep letter of 1298, which mostly lays out how to settle disputes about sheep. Some believe that these whale hunts are still an integral part of Faroey's culture and should be protected by UNESCO. But others don't agree - one woman says it is barbaric because whales go through such a traumatic death.
