In this environment of intractable and unending disagreement, people tried to appeal to sources of authority that might be somehow able to settle or adjudicate these endless disputes. And the most obvious place to turn was the bible, right? So protestants considered scripture to be the ultimate authority on matters of doctrine; catholic church also considered scripture as authoritative. Both sides hoped a correct reading of the bible would reveal the correct, pure doctrines of christianity. Now this of course, didn't happen. Because there is an infinite myriad of ways of interpreting the bible.
