Just over a thousand Cubans volunteer to go to Spain, and that's the largest number of any Latin American country. They didn't have to learn Spanish like so many of the international brigade volunteers who we're familiar with from Britain or Ireland. The majority of them were combat volunteers, but there were also medical volunteers, including several Cuban doctors. And they really ranged the whole gamut of work in the Spanish Civil War.
