Thrombocytopenia in Patients With Liver Disease
The most common mechanism of thrombocytopenia in patients with liver disease is sequestration from worsening splenomegaly. Once you have either encephalopathy or coagulopathy, that's really taking us into the territory of acute liver failure. That's when we really have to kind of mobilize resources quickly. And so I'm going to have this patient on a very high alert in brain. She needs to be monitoring for encephalopathy a couple of times a day. We've talked about things that cause chronic liver problems, including viral problems such as hepatitis C and Epstein-Barr virus.
