Native American Women's History - A Book Review
The captive Pocahontas is taken to the Jamestown Fort, where she is treated with some respect. Three days before her wedding, she converts to Christianity. The Powhatan tribe worship a hierarchy of gods and spirits; what the English see as conversion simply means she adds the Christian deity to the pantheon she already pays tribute to. Life as a colonist's wife will give her more status and freedom than she had as a high-born prisoner. But it is certainly no conventional love match.
