The Importance of Affinity in Chess

My father taught himself and he just read a couple books. He was smart to be a good chess player. You've got to be better than smart. I actually think you go beyond the realm of smart into a. new level of social interactions. Emery Tate was his name and everyone called him E.T. And if you cross that line, there is a harsh realities of the real world including violence. There's a difference between abuse and discipline. Of course, everyone with a brain understands that but he could very well have been extremely tough on me from a young age. So yeah, he did fantastically well in terms of teaching, especially disadvantaged children. It's quite unusual.
