Descartes's Radical Idea of the Meaning Crisis
In the 1930s or 40s, you could have a job as a computer. You would be given the task of taking equations and processing them in a logical mathematical fashion. The idea is if we can make our minds into purely computational machines, then we will achieve certainty. Certainty in our beliefs will give us what Descartes thinks we need in order to alleviate the anxiety that we're suffering.
