Is There a Narrative in Still Life Painting?
I think part of what defines it as good is that it opens itself up to the possibility of constructing a narrative around it. Well, bad, bad art has a very short track. My constant case is Philip Gustin, you know, when he started doing the cartoony paintings and I absolutely revered him for this super refined, anxious abstraction. And then suddenly the Ku Klux Klan was like the absolute peak of sensibility that I could imagine for myself and I was horrified. It helped me understand something foundational about what painting is,. Like really what a painting is.
