Ad m, i work on parasitism and one of the hallmark examples of a profound behavior witch within a species to do with infection with tox plasmosis. It changed is the smell of what's an otherwise terribly eversive stimulus, cat urine, it turns it into something that's actually attractive. The initial switch from repressing your kind of innate defensive behaviour could be easily overridden by other stimuli. And then subsequently evolve all these other additional behaviours where you're evolving into a much more social organism. I think that's where the complexity comes in.
