This is a continuation of a trend, but also a continuation of sort of worrying reverses for Western foreign policy in the region. It looks to me vanishingly unlikely that the new Nigerian hunter will improve security. But intervening militarily in Niger would be extraordinarily difficult. Its army is far from incompetent. And plenty of those who'd be trying to run this intervention have got security problems at home that this might distract them from.
