Cornwallis had to deal with a loyalist population strong enough to hold its own in a bitter civil war that was breaking out in carolinas. He soon discovered that these ignorant american rustics, not having educated properly at oxford, could not even do simple math. One of the big factors that led cornwallis to develop this permanent ulcer was the terrible paradox implicit in using force to put down a rebellion because brute force only tends to make more rebels.
