Geyserich and the vandal elite were busy inserting themselves into the high politics of the Roman Empire. He betrothed his son to the imperial princess Udokia, creating a direct link between the vandal royal house and the reigning emperor Valentinian III. When Valentinian III was murdered in 455, Geyserich headed to Italy to press his son's claim on Princess Udokia. In 455 they landed at the mouth of the Tiber, headed up river, and they sacked Rome itself.
