Diamond makes it seem like this is some sort of a pure test case where agriculturalists clashed with hunter gatherers. Abandoning agriculture doesn't need to be perceived as a backslide. Also, diamond does aly mention the fact that the invading mauri in 18 35 were groups who had themselves been displaced by warfare and contact with outsiders.
