Plato is recognizing that you have to do this in order to change people's opinions and minds. So says socrates, we'll beg omer and the other poets not to be harsh if we strike out these and all similar things. And so they're gong to have to instil new stories and new kinds of art. If truth and a realism is one of the dictates of art, conveying the human life in all its entiretya getting that across, then art might have no interestin expunging the fear of death from people.
