How Did Children Learn to Read in the 16th Century?
By Elizabeth's reign, learning to read was going quite low down society. Reading is a youth sport accomplished by the 16th century for all sorts of reasons. So I think there was a lot of pressure to send children to school to read. It must have encompassed even hundreds of thousands of population. We know almost nothing about it because it's done in people's houses.
