William march rice was a wealthy man in 19th century New York. His wife wanted to divorce him, but he didn't know it and she changed his will so that her relatives would get half of his estate when he died. He then launched a huge lawsuit against her family for the money they had taken from him during their seven or eight-year marriage. The book is based on an actual true story about this same couple.
