The Importance of Studying the Torah in the Satmoresek
The emphasis on teaching the boys to study the Torah, which is their gendered responsibility, means that they are in school for very long days. They're essentially only interacting in Yiddish and biblical Hebrew. On the other hand, the girls don't study the Torah. So it's not really to do with who's going to do the work in the Satmoresek. The men are actually the breadwinners on the whole. It really has to do with the emphasis on studying the Torah,. Which means that the boys end up learning very little English.
