There was a disagreement among the founders about taxation to support religious education and also about religious tests. The debate over whether this was a violation of religious conscience is still raging today. Michael: Does it violate a taxpayer's conscience if some of your tax dollars are used to support abortion? Or what about art, like maybe the depiction of Muhammad or art that is sacrilegious or obscene?
