No one really understands what consciousness is. We're all working into some kind of common definition. But here's the thing that we I and my colleagues insist upon in a book we're writing for Oxford University Press. All cells have all of the capacities that we grant ourselves. They are cognitive, aware of those measurements; they are sentient. This has really seduced a couple of generations of neuroscientists. It seems like a terrific idea. The only problem is there's no reason for it.
