Whales Weep Not by Deage Lawrence
Melville introduces the theme of ambiguity and potentially unreliable voices weighing in on questions. There's something sort of darkly humorous about this, he says. And I wonder if there's a degree to which Melville is giving us a sight of the end, right? The rolling of the whale seems so benign, but it's also a means of attack. It's a means by which the whales do their damage, right? So the rolling is essential. It's vital. It's the nature of the beast, the terrifying part of Whales Weep Not.
