The Flight of the Artist by Joyce
Joyce is a very optimistic man with respect to the capacity of a competent artist to achieve the release. Joyce inherits the late 19th century naturalistic novel tradition. But this little sentence of the opening that I've just quoted points out that there's going to be a mythological allegory running along here as well. The two whom I think of always in relation to each other are Joyce and Thomas Mann.
