syphilis often appeared for the first time after people had travelled through the town, particularly people from out of town. It was viewed as a matter of such huge public health importance that some towns or cities had laws forbidding people with syphilis from entering o and this part in particular, this whole, it came from somewhere else, is what gave syphilis its various nicknames. In england, it was called the french or the spanish sickness. The disease was seen as punishment for living an unclean or immoral life. But in terms of origins, which of these accusatory nicknames was right? W really the french disease brought over from france, or the german sickness?
