Gastropod is the podcast that looks at food through the lens of science and history. Today we're back with Maurice Schma, a writer for The Marshall Project who's been reporting on sheriffs. Sheriffs seem like a uniquely American phenomenon, but in fact they're not. We inherited sheriffs from England originally. They come to play this uniquely American role which is baked into how Americans see ourselves.
A growing number of county sheriffs believe they hold ultimate power in their jurisdictions. Some have even stopped enforcing state and federal laws they deem unconstitutional. The Marshall Project’s Maurice Chammah explains.
This episode was produced by Hady Mawajdeh, edited by Matt Collette, fact-checked by Laura Bullard, engineered by Paul Robert Mounsey, and hosted by Noel King.
