The Quorum of the Twelve Apostles
After Joseph Smith's death in 1844, there was debate over who should lead the church. Brigham Young and Sidney Rigdon were among those vying for that role. The quorum of the Twelve Apostles as a group proved to be the right choice. Ultimately, an overwhelming majority of members decided it should be led by the 12 apostles with Brigham Young as their president.
