JB: Shareholder Activists Can't Unlock Value

JB: Shareholder activism really only matters if it causes the firm to sell itself or spin out something for sale. JB says there's one exception where activists can't unlock value, and that's when they can convince companies to sell something big. "If you're just sort of overpaying out of one pocket ... then there's really not much gain from the activity," he adds.
