The Rind Mathematical Papyrus was discovered in Thebes, Egypt. It is the most famous mathematical papyrus to have survived from ancient Egypt. Some of the maths is very practical, other problems are more abstract. I think we see the beginnings of a realisation that mathematics is not about specific numbers - it's about general procedures.
