The Presumption of God's Mercy

Rabbis were very conscious of this problem. In the following parable, they nicely describe how both justice and mercy must be part of God's providential order. The key to understanding this passage is realizing in rabbinic thought that the personal name of God, rendered in capital letters YHWH, sometimes pronounced Yahweh, was thought to represent God's merciful character.
