The Tension Between Universalism and Ethnic Politics in China
Visa V: The last thing I was really expecting to read about was identity politics in China. That was kind of a surprise. And I've only recently learned these things that some of which are now touching on about the place of affirmative action in China. But you talk about there being a kind of tension between the party's universalism and sort of invocation, basically, of course, of class struggle. How does this affirmative action system work? I mean, you've just described it to some extent. It obviously plays a significant role in creating regional elites of certain kinds.
