The Influence of the Abolitionist Movement on Northern Culture
In early 1831, a man named Garrison in Boston began publishing his famous paper, the Liberator. In 1833, about 60 delegates were black and white to found the American Anti-Slavery Society. The society denounced voluntary gradual emancipation and black emigration. Abolitionists exercised a particularly strong influence on religious life,. It contributed heavily to schisms that separated Methodist and Baptists.
