The magic of golf is in shortness, says the author. Short courses give beginners a chance to have success on one hole - even it's just a single hole. The handicap system was designed to help less accomplished players be better competitors against some one else. But actually beating somebody, on the whole, is weigh more fun than taking off three shots because your handicap said you could against that.
