The Importance of Understanding the Nature of the State
Gramsci's integral state is a way of understanding the relationship between the two and how consent is produced among subaltern classes for the benefit of the elite. I think it's because we have to understand that tension and dialectical that the state is both incorporating the tend from civil society in order to manage it. The state has its own interests which is ensuring that capitalism is stable. It has a malocmonopoly on violence in the police force and in the military. This was incredibly helpful to understand why a Labour Party who was representing supposedly the working class in Australia and a trade union movement made up of working people were at odds with each other.
