The ancient greeks were famous for their seafaring ways, but drowning was also a common occurrence in historical records and in mythology. There are numerous accounts of drowning sailors being rescued by dolphins. In 18th century doctors became interested in how to revive people who had apparently drowned. And one invention commonly used was an air bag that you squeeze together with two handles - kind of like an accordion.
