The Influence of Agisileus on Spartan Politics
Even though he was supremely influential, Agisileus preferred to work through agents when he could. This made it possible for him to let others take credit for victories, but also gave him deniability. And most importantly of all, it helped implicate a larger number of fellow Spartans in controversial actions. It's very difficult to separate the actions of Sparta as a city from the decisions of Agisileu as a man.
