Andronicus Kommenos is the worst Byzantine Emperor that we've encountered. His fall feels like justice to us but in a way it might have been better if he'd clung to power. For all his monstrosity Andronicus was still Alexius Comnennus his grandson and that conferred on him a primacy amongst his kin which no other man enjoyed. Now his successor Isaac Anglos will face an endless stream of civil wars because he lacked what Andronicus had.
