The Importance of the Imperial Courts

The establishment of a permanent imperial judge, even if he was just an arbitrator, became the seed of what would later become the imperial courts that operated from 1495 to 1806. Any imperial prince would now have the right to exercise what essentially was royal power within his territory. It formally created a distinction between imperial princes and mediated vassals. While imperial princes, irrespective of whether they were bishops, abbot's dukes or land-grasp mark-grasp accounts, all shared the same rank.
