The Sacrament of Confession Is a Perfect Act of Contrition
Even if I went to confession last week and will imagine for the sake of argument that I've committed no sins whatsoever since then you know I could still confess sins that I've confessed before as an expression of my ongoing conversion. So it has a value in itself apart from or distinct from simply being preparatory for holy communion although it's worth noting that the Eucharist and penance are the two sacraments that we really can receive over and over and over again throughout our spiritual lives.
