In november 17 hundred, the king of spain died without a clear heir. This led to a succession crisis over who would replace him on the spanish throne. And it created a new kind of escalated threat, particularly to florida. The english and their trading emissaries increasingly make unofficial alliances with the creeks. So as philip the bourbon takes up rulership in spain, he seeks to continue the militarization of the empire that had begun earlier in the 16 hundreds.
