Gibbon criticized the empire for extending citizenship to questionable populations. But a century later, using Darwinian vocabulary, the theory had new currency. Monocasal explanations can be compelling, even sexy, in a kind of freakinomics kind of way. Their proponents have often less expertise in ancient Roman history and rarely explain more than one aspect of the fall.
