Is the Passion of the Muftees a Nationalist Passion or a Religious Passion?
The Muftees had religious Islamic overtones to the rhetoric quite explicitly. The average Arabic speaking resident of this land probably still would have identified more as a Muslim or as a Christian than a member of the Arab nation. This was a movement that was gaining steam at least in elite circles, and Antonius' book really influenced the British when they first recommended partitioning the land.
