Isabel Beck's Anchored Word Learning?
Strategy number two is called anchored word learning. The idea is to pick three, or no more than five words that are general academic terms. When i was an english teacher I would spend an inordinate amount of time talking about the weird words. It's probably you're going to see it in that story, but maybe not in a lot of other places. And i would do that pre teaching of the vocabulary that was in my text book back in those days.
