Teacherly authority is a hierarchy of competence and skill. It's not that one person's always in the position of teacher authority, that's super pathological. And so those kinds of discernments which need to be made on the part of the student and the teacher if they are honest and self reflective,. Those things need to be revealed and thematized and felt. The water has become so muddy in terms of how to detect legitimate teacherly authority that now we don't even know it when we see it.
