Adi shankara was the teacher, or goro who emerged from southern india. He vigorously promoted vedanta and put it forward as a more complete alternative to buddhism. In his view, all things in the universe are essentially brachman. They are all part of one essence. According to adwita, that which appears separate is actually illusory.
