EAB and Native Insects in the Forest
For settlement, pests and disease outbreaks within forest ecosystems were natural occurrences caused by native species. With the increasing frequency of non-native insect introductions, pests arrive in areas where trees have no natural defense in place. Asian Longhorn beetle and hemlock willy adelgid being two devastating examples. By the time EAB was discovered in Maine, the Wabanaki community had been preparing for the pests' arrival for more than a decade.
