The Special Hostility Toward Christians

Is the church today actually discourage the faithful from pursuing martyrdom? Is there, I mean, one doesn't want to pursue martyrdom. Ignatius of Antioch had a very special gift of the Holy Spirit to really want that with that kind of passion. There was something about the Christian that made them especially worthy as a target.
