The ways that people feel connected to each other within their group, within their in-group, is directly correlated with the amount of enmity they feel toward an out-group. Robert Argy's claim here is that aggression directed outward helps to hold the in-group together. I think this is an idea that we still see today in claims that xenophobia is somehow a natural kind of tendency in human behavior.
