The Battle of Tariffs in India
In the late 19th century, there was a great difficulty increasing tariffs because of the backlash coming from Lancashire. At the end of the war, India has a massive debt, also rising nationalism. What the British government decides to do in 1919 is to grant fiscal autonomy to India and write to charge his own taxes. And what would you do if you had fiscal autonomy in India? You don't want to stir up more nationalism, you increase tariffs. So we need to look very carefully here at how these debates go on.
